Easter in a egg-shell

We started the weekend with a trip to great-grandma Bywater's Easter Egg hunt. She lives in a retirement community and each year the staff host a fun egg hunt with too much candy and a breakfast for everyone at the end.
Easter traditions continued that afternoon with the coloring of the eggs. Grandma and Grandpa Coombs always supply each child with one dozen eggs, plenty of colors, drop cloth and a roll of paper towels--Anja needed all of it.

Carter gets really creative with stickers, crayons and other stuff he can find around the house-- this year's goal was to make multi-colored eggs. Mission accomplished!

Sunday afternoon brought the Easter egg hunt at Grandma and Grandpa Bywater's house. Carter loves it because there are always eggs filled with coins. Jensen likes it because Grandpa always remembers to buy *plain* chocolate candies and Anja likes it because there are always toys. I like it because the food is great and I don't have to do anything for it!!The kids allowed us a few group pictures this year. Anja was mad because I took away the giant container of bubbles just before we took the picture. The real Easter pictures are coming soon.

Fifteen Years and Counting

Today is our 15th anniversary. It's amazing for a few reasons. First, statistically speaking, being married under the age of 25 gave me a 63% chance of being divorced by the time I was 27 years old. Second, only 52% of the married population ever makes it to their 15 anniversary. Lastly, Rich could have picked a much easier person to live with. But, he didn't choose the easy road, he choose the one paved with a strong-willed woman's decisions--a career, couple of Emmys, handful of writing awards, traveling, social circles, nice house, nice car, nice diamond--okay that part I wanted and he indulged-- but none the less, things could have been easier if he would have jumped at the first opportunity to marry, but he didn't, he waited.

While he was struggling after he dissolved an engagement I was struggling with graduating from high school. It took two more years before our paths would cross. During that time, he ended his college football career, I headed toward Miss America, he started his medical schooling, I started at the U of U, he settled on Physical Therapy, I waffled on a major, he focused on his studies, I followed my heart-- and our worlds collided on Thanksgiving night when I met my girlfriends fiance who happened to be Rich's brother. Almost two years after that, we got married.

There aren't any regrets. I love being married to him. I struggle with being at home, but not being with him.
We've lived in a lot of different places and enjoyed a lot of different people. We've embraced change together even when it was hard.

I love to eat out, he agrees to go once a week, without fail--even if it makes him sick. He sits through chick-flicks. He doesn't make me go on road trips, we fly. He doesn't make me camp, we stay in hotels. He brings me flowers and pinches my butt when he walks by. He is a romantic.

He gets me, even more than my mom and sister do. He really knows what makes me tick--maybe better than I know myself. He knows what I need long before I do. He's so in tune to my weaknesses and my strengths. I love him for keeping my secrets and telling my jokes. Who knew you could get so much mileage out of swimsuit glue and "me time"? I love him because he always sides with me, even if I am wrong. I love him because when I am in the dark, he is the light, he never gives up on me. He knows I can do it and do it well. This may not have been the life I envisioned for myself 15 years ago, but what I have is so much better... I love him because we don't live with "what ifs". Thank you for taking a chance and marrying me. Happy anniversary--

No, I'm not dead...

No, I'm not dead, just taking a break to focus on life. It sucks sometimes, but other times it is a blast. More to come.

Too funny, if you are Mormon

This is circulating on the Internet but it was funny enough to share.

It's been nine years..

They say that time goes much faster once you have kids and I agree. This marks the ninth anniversary of my grandma's death. I was there when it happened and I felt her spirit finally leave. It took several weeks for her to finally go and when she did, she did it on her terms. A week doesn't go by that I don't think about her. I didn't realize how ingrained she was in me until she was gone. I have funny memories, long memories and life lesson memories of grandma. I miss her sewing, her old fashioned ways of saving everything and I miss her smile. I miss her constant singing and humming and quick whit. I have parts of her still. I see so much of the grandma I remember in my mom and I love it. I hear her humming in Jensen. I see her whit in Carter and if I look close enough I see her ability to love in me. Each Christmas I pull out The Little Match Girl story and remember the picture that still hangs in their house.

I'm lucky to still have grandpa around and full of life. My kids know him as well as they know their own grandpa. After all, he's the great grandpa with a cabin! Miss you grama, but love you just the same.

April Fools Rip Off

I stole this idea from TV but it was so much fun I had to share. I made "cupcakes" for dinner tonight...

The boys were fooled for a second...

Anja didn't care what they were and ate it as if it was a cupcake.

(meatballs cooked in cupcake cups and frosted with instant potatoes colored with green food coloring -- yum!)

My babies not so little stat's

We got back from the doctor's office and I had to post Anja's stat's for the grandparents. As parents we use these strange "average" bell curve things to base our child's growth, weight and general progression into adulthood. Here's what I knew before we went in:

1. Anja is tall for her age, but has more dexterity than the average two year old (explanation: survival. With two big brothers you have to keep up)

2. She weights more than the average two year old (explanation: She eats everything)

3. She will not be afraid of the shots (explanation: she could care less if there is a sucker involved)

Here's the doc's point of view--

1. 27.4 lbs (60-percentile)--Jensen weights 40lbs

2. 35.5 inches (90-percentile, more Bywater, less Coombs)--Jensen is 45.5 inches

3. conversation with Dr. Brian:

Anja: "I want that."
Dr. B: "Want what?"
Anja: "That necklace." (mom explanation: the stethoscope)

Shots-- Anja watched the nurse put a needle in both legs without a flinch or cry. however, when we walked out and had to choose just one Tinkerbell sticker, there was a full out tantrum worthy of every one's attention.
